The pharynx is divided into the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. It connects the nasal and oral cavities to the larynx and esophagus. It is lined with stratified squamous nonkeratinized epithelium. It contains diffuse lymphatic tissue and lymphatic nodules called pharyngeal tonsils. The nasopharynx is connected to each middle ear cavity by the auditory tube/Eustachian tube/pharyngo-tympanic tube.
The larynx is a passageway for air between the oropharynx and the trachea. It is formed by irregularly shaped pieces of hyaline and elastic cartilage. It also serves in sound production.
